Flamengo consolidated their position at the summit of the Campeonato Carioca with a hard fought but ultimately comfortable victory against Botafogo on Sunday evening. A fifth straight victory in all competitions wasn’t secured until the final stages but a last minute goal kept Flamengo an impressive seven points clear of nearest rivals Fluminense.

With Botafogo focussing on this week’s Libertadores fixtures, the visitors were widely expected to triumph at the Maracana and were ahead within 10 minutes as midfielder Gabriel notched his sixth goal for the club.

It wasn’t until the 90th minute that a goal from Leo wrapped up the three points to leave Botafogo languishing in seventh place in the state table, some 18 points behind their neighbours.
