A rare opportunity for Fabio to impress new manager David Moyes was thrown away by the Brazilian as he saw red only four minutes after coming on as a substitute in the F.A. Cup Third Round tie against Swansea at Old Trafford.

After replacing injured veteran Rio Ferdinand after 76 minutes , and with the score level at 1-1, the left-back received a straight red for a reckless challenge on Swansea’s Jose Canas, a contributing factor in United losing the game 2-1.

Wilfried Bony’s 90th minute header settled the tie but Fabio will be kicking himself more than most for a dismissal which is hardly going to persuade Moyes of a future at the Reds for the 23 year-old.

Twice-capped Fabio, who has been at the club alongside his brother and Brazil hopeful Rafael since 2007, was called off the bench at the club where he believes there is another chance for him to shine, given the uncertainty surrounding competitor Alex Buttner.

However, his misdemeanour signals what could be the end of the road for one of the da Silva brothers.
