Brazilian defender Lúcio has been released from his São Paulo contract a year early and is set to join newly promoted Palmeiras according to iG Esporte.

The 35-year-old defender last played against Internacional in July but couldn’t prevent Tricolor being defeated 1-0. He played ten times in the Brasileirão for them but was on the losing side six times.

He is now set to move to Palmeiras who showed interest in signing the defender even before their promotion to the Brasileirão and they were initially chasing his signature in 2012.

In December Palmeiras coach Gilson Kleina told radio Bandeirantes that “Lúcio is a winner, team captain and a high-level player”. Now that he has been released from his contract he can finally join the São Paulo based club.

It is expected that the centre back will sign a contract with the newly promoted team soon and will embark on the 7th club challenge of his career.

Lúcio first appeared in the Brasileirão for Internacional before moving to German side Bayer Leverkusen. He became a household name at the club and went on to join Bayern Munich before moving to Italian giants Internazionale and Juventus.

The World Cup winner is coming towards the twilight of his career but will hope to show his worth for Palmeiras next season if he is to join the club.
