The old forward of the Seleção Jair Rosa Pinto, a runner up in the World Cup 1950, died on Thursday morning in Rio de Janeiro following a pulmonary embolism.

84 years old, the ex-international was recovering from an operation to the abdomen a few days previous at the Lagoa hospital, in the south Rio.

Jaïr began his career in Madureira Rio before becoming a true idol at the biggest Brazilian clubs Flamengo, Vasco, São Paulo, Palmeiras and Santos, where he partnered with Pelé.

In 1950, Jair played in the final of the World Cup which Brazil lost 2-1 against Uruguay, in the Maracana stadium of Rio de Janeiro. His ashes were buried in the cemetery of Caju, in the harbour zone of Rio de Janeiro on Thursday afternoon.
