Barcelona have made Chelsea’s Brazilian defender David Luiz their top priority in the summer according to reports in England.

The Daily Express reports that Tito Vilanova have targeted the Seleção star in an attempt to strengthen their defence despite captain Carles Puyol recently signing a contract extension.

Barcelona are facing a derth of options at the back, with only Gerard Pique and Carles Puyol as first team options although Javier Mascherano and Alex Song have deputised there.

The paper also suggests that if any move were to arise, Chelsea would want to recoup a large chunk of the £21m they paid Benfica for the Brazilian in 2011.

However, Chelsea are thought to be reluctant to sell Luiz, especially to a major European rival.

At this moment in time, Luiz will be focusing on helping Chelsea’s campaign, as they lie in third and facing a challenge for the Champions League places by London rivals Tottenham and Arsenal.
