Arsenal defender André Santos is set to join Grêmio on a year-long loan deal.

The Brazilian full-back travelled to Porto Alegre on Sunday to finalise the switch, with the Gunners able to cut the move short after six months if they desire.

Rui Costa, the club’s executive director, said: “[Santos] is coming from Arsenal to Grêmio. Naturally everyone is talking a lot about [Hernan] Barcos, but André is a huge signing for us.

“They are both players who want to be part of our project, who come to add a lot of depth to our squad and to win titles."

Santos has made just 13 league starts since arriving from Turkish side Fenerbahçe in a £6.2million move in August 2011.

The 29-year-old has struggled to adapt to the Premier League and has now been allowed to find more regular first-team opportunities back in his homeland.

His imminent exit has restricted Arsene Wenger"s left-back options as Kieran Gibbs has been ruled out for another four to six weeks.
