Walter Montillo is confident he can strike a fruitful partnership with Neymar after making his Santos debut in the Paulistão at the weekend.

Montillo, 28, signed for Santos from Cruzeiro last month and, while he failed to get on the scoresheet against São Bernado, he was happy with the team’s performance.

“With Neymar it is much easier to play,” he told reporters.

“He is different and we need to help him to win games, as we did against São Bernado. We did will, but we can improve our partnership to be successful.”

Santos won the game 3-1, thanks to a goal from Ezequiel Miralles and two from Neymar, but Montillo had a golden chance to open his account for his new club, set up by Neymar, when he was put through on goal, rounded the keeper but failed to score.

“I had a little anxiety (fumbled the chance). I have a lot to improve,” said the Argentine, who was angry at missing the opportunity.

However, Montillo believes that his new team are gelling as a squad and will continue to improve as the season progresses.

“Gradually, I think everyone will improve. We have to improve a lot, but I think the start was good,” he added.
