Grêmio have signed former Liverpool left-back Emiliano Insúa from Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon, according to reports in Portugal.

A Bola claim that Insúa, 24, has agreed to join the Porto Alegre club in a deal worth around €3million and the move is expected to be announced by the club on Monday after personal terms were agreed late on Sunday evening.

Coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo has moved to sign the defender so to provide competition with Insúa’s former Liverpool teammate Fábio Aurélio, who has suffered a number of injuries since joining Grêmio, and also because Alex Tellos is considered to inexperienced.

Insúa started his career at Boca Juniors but moved to Liverpool, first on loan and then permanently, without making a senior appearance for Boca after being spotted by scouts from the English giants while playing for the Argentinian under 17s.

He became the first choice left-back under Rafa Benitez but struggled to adapt to the pace of the English game and, after the Spaniard left, it was made clear he no longer had a place at Anfield and was sent on loan to Turkish club Galatasaray, before moving to Sporting in 2011.
