Vasco da Gama are set to hold on to their most prized asset defender Dedé, despite the poor financial situation which has seen them lose veteran star Juninho and Felipe.

Dedé, 24, is one of the most sought after central defenders in the world and has been linked with a number of top European clubs, including Barcelona and AC Milan, and also Club World Cup winners Corinthians in recent months.

However, Vasco’s executive director René Simões is hopeful that they can keep the defender at the club for the near future.

“He is in Vasco for now," Simões told Radio Brasil on Wednesday.

“And has nothing but a proposal [from Corinthians] that came but of that I think it does not solve our problems.

“Dedé is the key to the change of Vasco, he has the winning mentality and has that love for Vasco. He is an essential player on the team".

Vasco have had problems over the past few months in being able to pay their players on time and are looking to reduce the wage bill to ease these worries.
