Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has hailed the performance and hard work of Brazilian team-mate David Luiz, following the former-Benfica star’s goalscoring performance in the club’s 8-0 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday.

David Luiz, 25, has been utilised in midfield on several occasions over the past few weeks, with Chelsea short of options as Nigerian John Obi Mikel serves a three-match suspension.

In the demolition of Premier League rivals Villa, Luiz was awarded Man of the Match for his performance at the base of midfield—a game in which he scored a stunning free-kick in the first-half.

The strike, reminiscent of the style of former Blues striker Didier Drogba, was heralded by Lampard post-match.

“You don’t see the hours people put in on the training pitch to work on that technique,” Lampard told Chelsea’s official website. “David has done it and now you are seeing the rewards because every time we get one in that area you fancy him to get it on target.”

Regarding Luiz’s adaptation to a midfield role, the England international added: “He has the ability to play either position and he has been a fantastic defender at this club.

“People say that central midfield is also a role for him and I think they are right, you still have to have discipline and be in the right position and you can’t take liberties, and against Villa he showed that he has the discipline and the ability to do that role.”
