Arnaldo Tirone, president of recently relegated Palmeiras, has revealed that the club have rejected a bid from a Russian club for the services of striker Hernan Barcos.

Barcos, 28, has been an important figure for Palmeiras in his year at the club, but found himself helpless to prevent the Verdão sinking to relegation following internal turmoil at the club.

Interest from Italy has emerged in the centre-forward in recent weeks, but the bid from Russia is the first offer officially reported by the club.

“Barcos has a contract until 2015 and he will complete it,” Tirone told reporters. “Of course there have been approaches – we rejected a proposal from a Russian team for him. He also didn’t want to go.

“Palmeiras are not selling Barcos. He is a reference, an idol and we need this.”

Despite Tirone’s insistance, though, it is widely reported that the former LDU Quito player is considering his options following Palmeiras’ demotion.

It is believed the striker is concerned that the lack of attention he will receive in the Brazilian second-tier will harm his chances of retaining his place in the Argentina National Team set-up.
