Atlético Mineiro’s coach Cuca has congratulated Fluminense on their fourth title admitting that it was fully deserved.

Fluminense clinched the title after winning 3-2 against Palmeiras while Atlético could only manage a 1-1 draw with Vasco despite taking the lead through a Ronaldinho penalty.

Cuca told reporters: “Fluminense deserved it, congratulations to them. They had a great campaign and we had problems in the away games.

“Most of our away games were like today’s against Vasco. We had an even better performance, we created many chances but failed to put the ball in the net. I don’t know what happened.

“But we can be proud, we had a great season.”

Cuca also took the time to remind reporters that he played a role in Fluminense’s path to the top: “In 2009, when I took the team on the brink of relegation, I was forced to put off many important players because they did not fit my philosphy.

“A younger manager came in and managed to avoid relegation and since then Fluminense have gained a lot of confidence. He has turned the team into warriors.”
