Cruzeiro president Gilvan Tavares has confirmed that coach Celso Roth will definitely leave the club at the end of the season.

The 54-year-old has only been in charge of Cruzeiro for six months but the Belo Horizonte side are looking for a change in management for next season.

Roth’s lack of popularity amongst the playing squad, due to his strict attitude in training, is the main reason behind the board’s decision, which has been in place for a long time.

Gilvan Tavares said: “He will manage for these last games and get to the end.

“We do not want to change coach now, because the championship is ending and he knows the squad well.”

Roth said: “I will not be here next year. I have known that for a long time.

“There was no malice, I have good relationship with the board. What happened was a difference of opinions, which I find absolutely normal.”

Tavares also refused to comment on speculation that the club have spoke to former Vasco da Gama coach Marcelo Oliveira about the role.

The President recently revealed that current Grêmio head coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo is the board’s favourite to take over next season.

Cruzeiro, who are currently thirteenth in the Brasileirão with 43 points, have lost their last three games in a row, the most recent being a 4-0 defeat to Santos.

Their four remaining fixtures include visits to the league’s top two sides Fluminense and Atlético Mineiro.
