AC Milan striker Alexandre Pato has returned to training after a groin injury sidelined him for the start of the season.

Pato, 23, who has suffered injury problems throughout his career, is not likely to feature in the Milan derby on Sunday as AC Milan face Inter.

The next fixture after the international break, against Lazio, is seen as the ideal fixture for his return to first team action.

The Brazilian has not played since the Champions League tie against Barcelona in April although he played for Brazil at the London 2012 Olympics.

He was set to start the season anew, but a setback came as he suffered a groin tear in pre-season.

Stephan El-Shaarwary and Giampaolo Pazzini have taken up striker duties in Pato’s absence but AC Milan are struggling with a lack of goals as they start the season in poor form.

AC Milan are currently 11th in the Serie A, five points behind rivals Inter in third.
