Legendary Brazil striker Ronaldo is to appear in a reality television show as he attempts to lose weight for an upcoming charity match.

The 36-year-old was forced to retire from professional football last year due to thyroid problems and has been unable to maintain fitness since doing so.

With an annual charity match against a side including former Real Madrid teammate Zinedine Zidane coming up in December, he now wants to get back in shape.

“I have problems with the weighing scales. It’s a real trauma. I have already tackled many challenges and this will not be easy,” he told Globo.

“Those who have tried to lose weight know that. But I am getting on with it with high spirits.

“I have a game against Zidane’s friends in Porto Alegre in December and I want to be ready for it. That’s the big challenge.”

As well as Real, Ronaldo played for the likes of PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona and Inter among others.

He is the top scorer in World Cup finals history with 15 and won the Golden Boot as Brazil lifted the trophy in 2002.
