Montillo’s son, Santino, has been suffering in recent weeks, undergoing intestinal surgery to add to a further operation earlier this year.

A sufferer of Down’s Syndrome, Santino Montillo has experienced many complications in his 19-months on Earth and his father, Cruzeiro playmaker Walter has admitted his personal anguish.

The Universidad de Chile players showed their support for the Argentine and paraded a banner of solidarity at the end of the game, on the day when the infant was finally allowed to return home.

“I am relieved and very happy to have Santino back home,” said Montillo Snr. in a statement.

“These days whilst he has been hospitalized were complicated, but I have always tried to keep my head on Cruzeiro, to help them fight against relegation.”

The banner read:- “Santino have strength, Walter have courage”
