Liverpool take on Sunderland, with Lucas likely to start for the home side. Fabio Aurelio may be replaced in the starting line-up by new signing Jose Enrique, while Doni will be on the bench.

Bruno Ribeiro could make his debut for Blackburn Rovers when they play host to Wolverhampton Wanderers. The 28-year-old only signed yesterday, but is likely to go straight into the squad.

Newly-promoted Queens Park Rangers are at home to Bolton Wanderers, and recent addition Bruno Perone will hope to be involved. However, he faces tough competition in the squad, with fellow centre-back Danny Gabbidon confirmed to be making his debut.

On Sunday, champions Manchester United get their campaign underway when they travel to West Bromwich Albion. United are likely to be without Michael Carrick and Patrice Evra, which could mean starting places for Anderson and Fabio, while Rafael may take the right-back spot.

Chelsea also play on Sunday, away to Stoke City. David Luiz will miss out through injury, which could mean a start for Alex. Michael Essien is a long-term injury absentee, so Ramires may start at the Britannia Stadium.

Tottenham’s game against Everton was postponed, meaning there is no fixture for Heurelho Gomes or Sandro, although the latter is injured and would have missed the game in any case.
