Vasco da Gama didn’t have a positive start to the 2023 season, and fans aren’t taking it lightly. In the wake of an embarrassing 4-1 defeat to Flamengo on Monday, a number of fans tried to invade São Januário, sparking chaotic scenes in front of the social stadium’s gates.

With at least 50 fans reportedly creating havoc by firing fireworks and attempting to get through the gates, the Military Police were called and two men were arrested. The club later released a statement reacting to the incident.

Vasco da Gama fans upset with the club’s results

“Vasco da Gama deeply regrets the depredation of the São Januário Stadium last Monday night (05/06). The club understands the fans’ dissatisfaction and understands that the results on the field are below expectations, but it is absolutely unjustifiable that a symbol of all Cruzmaltinos is destroyed. Vasco has already reached out to the authorities to prevent episodes like this from happening again and that the culprits are identified,” a club statement read.

The team is in a critical situation, not only because of its results on the pitch. Vasco da Gama are currently 19th in the Brasileirão table with just six points in nine games, which is why fans ask for the sacking of coach Maurício Barbieri. However, they’re upset with the board anyway, having organized protests asking for the departure of president Jorge Salgado, CEO Luiz Mello and other executives in the last few weeks.
