Set for a new challenge? Renan shines at Timão and is on the radar of European clubs
Fans pressure the board to make signings when a team is understaffed or needs to replace a player who is leaving. However, the answer is often found within.
With defender Joao Victor in the starting lineup, Corinthians have significantly improved their defensive strategy. But Benfica just purchased him. The board considered recruiting a replacement for him. However, it seems it won’t be required.
Robert Renan shines at Timão
The club’s defensive issues may be resolved without the need to go to the market, thanks to defender Robert Renan, who joined Corinthians from the lower categories and has been playing outstanding football.
The athlete, who is 18 years old and 1.86 metres tall, excels in the aerial game. He has already defended the Brazilian under-20 team and made his Timao debut against Portuguesa-RJ in this year’s Copa do Brasil (1-1).
The professional squad of Timao played in only four games. That was sufficient for him to get the support of the audience. Following Corinthians’ scoreless tie with Santos in the 14th round of the Brazilian Championship, Robert was chosen as the game’s top performer.
But clubs overseas were aware of this sudden triumph, of course. Timao’s board was forced to take action when Robert Renan already caught the interest of significant clubs in Europe, renewing his contract through 2024 and imposing a R$ 74 million termination fee.
Speculated on German football
The German soccer team Borussia Dortmund is reportedly planning a million-dollar bid for the Corinthians revelation in the next months, according to journalist Jorge Nicola. Only 55% of the athlete’s commercial rights belong to Corinthians.
Nicola claims that Timao’s president, Dulio Monteiro Alves, is likely to accept a bid that is in the neighbourhood of €11 million (about R$60 million). However, the youthful potential is not just of interest to the Germans.
Possible trade in England
According to Gazzetta Esportiva, Robert Renan’s manager recently travelled to Europe to assess all of the surveys conducted by clubs on the continent.
Two potential English football interested parties include Manchester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers. The player shouldn’t play Brazilian football for very long after arriving at Corinthians to defend the under-17 squad.
Corinthian coach praise
The Portuguese Vtor Pereira, the captain of Corinthians, took note of Robert Renan’s strong performances. The coach made a statement on the young athlete after the encounter versus Santos in the 14th round of the Brazilian Championship.
“Robert had an excellent game play. Against two threatening forwards, excellent, I believe it was flawless. I can’t recall a single action, so it may have been either, but he played a smart, straightforward game with tact. I really enjoyed it”, the coach stated during a news conference.
