Volpi shines as São Paulo thrash Flamengo in a big game at Maracanã

Tiago Volpi had a bright afternoon saving two penalties and giving an assist. São Paulo’s goals were scored by Tchê TchêBrennerReinaldo and Luciano while Pedro scored Flamengo’s only goal. 

Tiago Volpi left Maracanã as the talking point of São Paulo’s victory. The goalkeeper saved two penalty kicks taken by Bruno Henrique and Pedro. In the second half, he also got an assist in the game when he launched a ball to Luciano. 

Flamengo lost the opportunity to take over the leadership of the Brasileirão. 

The home side took the lead early on in just six minutes with Pedro. But their lead was short lived, ten minutes later as Tchê Tchê equalizedFlamengo then failed to take the lead couple of minutes later when Everton Ribeiro missed a spot kick. Before the end of the first half, Brenner scored to put his side in the lead following a lethal cross from Reinaldo. 

The second half started with great intensity, with São Paulo dominating right from the start. In the 59th minute, the visitors extended their lead through the penalty spotReinaldo stood up to take the spot kick after the VAR’s review. 

The away side goalkeeper still Volpi saved Pedro’s penalty kick close to the end of the second period before assisting Luciano for his team’s fourth goal. The game ended 4-1. 

São Paulo are five points behind the first place having played three games less. On Wednesday, Flamengo receives Atlético-PR in the second leg of the Copa do Brazil round of 16 while São Paulo returns to face Lanus.
