Vasco da Gama move further up the table after hard fought win against Botafogo

Vasco da Gama moved into fourth place in Brazil’s Serie A on Sunday with a 3-2 win over city rivals Botafogo in Rio de Janeiro. 

Ribamar put Vasco ahead after 35 minutes but although Matheus equalized for the home side five minutes into the second half, a quick double from German Cano and Ygor in the 71st and 73rd minutes respectively put Vasco 3-1 ahead and in the driving seat. 

Matheus pulled a goal back for Botafogo six minutes from the final whistle but Vasco held on to take all three points. 

The striker was the main name of Botafogo in the match. With five submissions, Matheus Babi moved well in the attack, played practically all the balls and appeared as an option in the main chances of the team. Hence, it was no surprise he scored the two goals for Botafogo. 

The result means Vasco climb into fourth place with 17 points from nine gamesthree points behind leaders Internacional, who have played a game more. 

Botafogo, who have now gone five games without a win, are fourth from bottom of the league, with nine points. 

Botafogo and Vasco return to the field for the 11th round of the Brasileirão next Sunday. The Autuori team will host Santos at Nilton Santos. Ramon Menezes" team goes to Couto Pereira to face Coritiba. 

Just before the above games, the rivals meet again at Nilton Santos for the first game of the fourth phase of the Copa do Brasil scheduled to take place next Thursday.
