Thiago Silva was not named to the team of the season despite being a member of the team that won the UEFA Champions League this season despite being one of the finest defenders in the competition.

Given his fine performances for the Blues in defence and how he went on to defy his age to play at the top level, many would have expected him in the team of the season, especially as Chelsea went on to win his competition. However, UEFA had other things in mind. Regardless, you would barely find a least without a Brazilian and a trio of names still made the cut on this occasion.

Following a season in which the Londoners won the competition for the second time in club history, three Chelsea players made the cut.

In the goalkeeping department, Mendy is joined by Thibaut Courtois of Real Madrid and Ederson Moraes of the Citizens.

Ruben Dias of Manchester City, Marquinhos of Paris Saint-Germain, and David Alaba of Bayern Munich, who is now at Real Madrid, join the campaign winners Ben Chilwell, Cesar Azpilicueta, and Antonio Rudiger in defence.

Both finalists had three players in the midfield, with Jorginho, Mason Mount, and N’Golo Kante for the champions, and Kevin De Bruyne, Gundogan, and Phil Foden for the runner-up. The list was completed by Luka Modric (Real Madrid) and Sergio Oliveira (Porto).

Chelsea’s and Man City’s attacking players did not make the cut. Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland, Paris Saint-Kylian Germain’s Mbappe, Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski, Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema, Paris Saint-Germain’s Neymar and Barcelona’s Lionel Messi were all ranked first.
