After four games without a win in all competitions, Corinthians beat Coritiba 1-0 on Wednesday night at Couto Pereira in a game valid for the 23rd round of the Brasileirão. The win ensured that they moved away from the bottom tier positions of the Brazilian Championship.

In a reserved game most of the time, Timão scored in a penalty kick from Fábio Santos in the first half and in the process recorded their first triumph in November.

Coxa again did not play well and continues in the relegation zone. The team got better in the second half with more chances but ultimately didn’t take so much danger to Walter’s goal.

Most of the deciding moments came in the first half. Even before the game started, Corinthians had to make a big change in the lineup. Goalkeeper Cássio felt pain in his left thigh during the warm-up and was replaced by Walter. Despite the loss of their captain, Corinthians dominated early on and even went close to scoring in the first minute.

The deciding moment of the game came in the 20th minute when Lucas Piton kicked the ball at Maílton’s hand and after a VAR review, a penalty was awarded. Fábio Santos made no mistake from the spot kick and scored the only goal of the game.

The victory takes Corinthians six positions up to reach ninth place, with 29 points. However, the team may fall on the standings with the complement of the round which will have games on Thursday, Saturday and Monday. Coritiba, on the other hand, are in 18th position, with 20 points.

Timão will return to the field next Wednesday against Fortaleza away from home. Coxa faces RB Bragantino next Saturday again at Couto Pereira.
