In a re-scheduled game for the 33rd round of the Championship, Santos took all three points against Corinthians on Wednesday.

The victory was more or less an important win as it keeps Pexie in a good position to secure a spot in the 2021 Libertadores qualifiers. It was even better that the win came against a Corinthians side also in search of the same thing.

The winning goal came via Marcos Leonardo 10 minutes into the second half. On a day where top-scorer Marinho didn’t score, he created the assist for the winning goal.

In general, the game was a rather dull one with little to no creativity for most of the 90 minutes.

The first half in particular was one to forget, including a moment that saw the game take a halt after a power outage in the stadium.

In the second half of the game, Soteldo came off the bench to add a bright spark for Pexie and he did change the pace of the game and made Santos open up more. However, the evening ended badly for him as he had to come off in the 64th minute after suffering an injury. He is now a doubt to play in their next game. Corinthians searched for the equalizer through counter-attacks but got no breakthrough and suffered their second successive defeat.

With the latest victory, Santos are now up to seven consecutive victories over their rivals Corinthians at Vila Belmiro. The last time Peixe lost at home in this fixture goes all the way back to 2014 in the Brazilian Championship.

For their next outing, Santos welcome Fluminense also to Vila Belmiro on Sunday. Corinthians receive Vasco at the Neo Quimica arena on the same day.
