Nene’s brace inspires Fluminense back to winning ways
It was a good reaction after two consecutive defeats (São Paulo and Flamengo) and saw Tricolor Flu Fluzão further climb up the table of the Brazilian Championship.
Flu’s top scorer in the season, Nene, with 17 goals, scored one goal each time.
His latest brace came against a Timão who debuted coach Dyego Coelho (took over after Tiago Nunes’s dismissal).
The first 15 minutes mostly dominated by Fluminense, who came to have 80% possession of the ball against a Corinthians who entered the field with the intention of having control of the midfield, with Gabriel, Éderson and Cantillo together. Alas, it was Flu who broke the deadlock.
The former Monaco and Paris St Germain striker put the home side ahead after eight minutes when he hooked home a cross from a prone position and he doubled their lead when he converted a penalty two minutes from time.
Fluminense had Lucas Barcellos sent off in the 90th minute and then Mateus Vital got a goal back for Corinthians but the three points stayed in Rio.
Under a new command, however, Corinthians showed difficulties to attack once again. They could only manage a consolation goal through Mateus Vital, at the last minute. At this stage, Timão can actually start to worry about being close to the relegation spots.
The result was Fluminense’s first win in four matches and lifted them into eighth place in the Serie A, with 14 points from 10 games.
Corinthians, who sacked their coach after Thursday’s loss to city rivals Palmeiras, are in 14th spot, with nine points from nine matches.
