Fluminense suffer defeat to Atlético-GO and get eliminated from the Copa do Brasil
Vagner Mancini’s team, even without a great performance, dominated the game in the 90 minutes against a slow and lost Fluminense on the field. With goals from Chico, ex-tricolor Marlon Freitas and Matheus Vargas in the 47th minute, Dragão won 3-1 and avoided the drama of penalties. Luccas Claro grabbed for Flu, but it was not enough after the 1-0 victory in the first leg. Hence, Atlético won 3-2 in total on aggregate.
With the elimination, Fluminense increased their poor run to six years without qualifying against a Serie A team in the Copa do Brasil. The last time they did so was way back in 2015, when Tricolor eliminated Grêmio in the quarterfinals.
Following their qualification, Atlético-GO guaranteed themselves a hefty sum.
The prize for teams that advance to the octaves of the Brazil Cup is R $ 2.6 million.
Atlético-GO was the last team to secure a spot in the fourth phase of the Copa do Brasil and joins Botafogo, Ceará, América-MG and Juventude. It is worth remembering that in the round of 16 the Brazilian teams competing for the Libertadores enter. The draw takes place next Thursday at CBF’s headquarters in Rio de Janeiro.
Before the round of 16, Atlético-GO will turn their attention to the Brazilian Championship. Dragão plays on Sunday against Botafogo at the Olympic Stadium once again. For Fluminense, they will return to the field on Monday when they host Coritiba in a crucial showdown at Nilton Santos.
