This particular fixture has so much history behind it and this time it there was so much more at stake.

With Flamengo well in the running for the title race, there was a whole lot to play for. Over the years, this fixture always counts as one of the most anticipated ones yet and we’ll use that opportunity to take a brief look at the history of the fixture.

Flamengo and Vasco are among two of the most successful sides in Rio and this particular fixture is termed the Clássico Dos Milhões. It is not just one of the best rivalries in Brazilian football but one of the very best in world football.

The rivalry is based on the ‘popularity’ contest between both sides as well as the number of titles they have between them.

On the latest occasion of the Clássico Dos Milhões, goals from Gabriel Barbosa and Bruno Henrique scored in either half to secure Fla the victory and see them move to just two points off current leaders Internacional.

For Bruno Henrique, it was a special goal for the winger as it saw him reach a brilliant landmark of 100 career goals. It was also his 14th goal in 22 Rio classics. In fact, he has scored against Vasco than against any other Rio side, with seven of those 14 strikes coming against Gigante da Colina.

Speaking on reaching the landmark, the 30-year-old said: “I always wanted and dreamed that, even with the difficulties, I would reach that mark. For some it may be little, but it was the little that I started and I will increase my income every day”.

After Internacional dropped points to Athletico-PR, the title race just got even more interesting with only six points now separating the top three sides with four games to go.

Flamengo can continue to dream of the title and it’ll be interesting to see how it all ends over the coming weeks.
