Rubro-Negro were considered favorites to retain the title before the start of the tournament. But their recent outings and lackluster performances so far are making that looking impossible as it stands. In addition to the defeat, Fla still had Diego Alves sent off after his reckless foul in the 37th minute on Matheus Vargas.

Domènec Torrent’s team has now failed to register a goal so far in the competition.

And has also failed to impress game wise with the team’s style of play not very great to watch. On the other hand, the Athletic team, which debuted, starts on the right foot.

The Catalan coach opted for three at the back and Rafinha at the left. This decision failed horribly giving Atlético-GO the edge to capitalize and take the lead. The team’s performance was below par giving their opponent room to score two goals early on in the first half. The goals came from Hyuri and Jorginho.

Flamengo goalkeeper Diego Alves was sent off in the 37th minute after a dangerous foul on striker Matheus Vargas inside the area.

In the second half after a poor first first, Torrent decided to have a change in formation and went with four at the back with two center halves. With the resulting change of the formation, the team improved but still wasn’t able to break the Dragons, who later added another goal to make it three. Ferrareis scored the third goal.

Flamengo’s next game would be against Coritiba in Paraná on Saturday while Atlético-GO who went home with all three points against Fla will welcome Sport Recife at the Olympic stadium on Sunday the next day.
