Flamengo claimed derby bragging rights and a title to go with as they defeated Fluminense to win the Carioca Championship. A 3-1 victory over their rivals on Sunday night ensured that Flamengo won the 37th title in the club’s history.

The usual name of Gabigol was the star of the day once again as he bagged a brace on the occasion. There was also a landmark moment for the young João Gomes, who is only just starting out his career with Flamengo. Veteran forward Fred grabbed the consolation goal for Fluminense via the penalty spot.

Regardless, the standout name on the occasion was João Gomes who grabbed his first goal for the club in brilliant fashion. With Flamengo leading 2-1 at the time, the 20-year-old came on from the bench and more or less changed the course of the tie with his first touch. He pounced on a rebound from Marcos Felipe to put the game beyond doubt for Flamengo.

Elsewhere, Marcos Felipe had a day to forget in goal for Fluminense. He was arguably at fault for two of Flamengo’s goals and also conceded the penalty which Gabriel Barbosa converted.

This was the sixth time Flamengo have won the Carioca Championship.

Gabigol ends the tournament on a high

It was perhaps fitting that Gabigol finished as the best player of the Carioca Championship. The forward continued his prolific form as he bagged two goals in two minutes to inspire his side to a win. Following another brace, the 24-year-old finished the competition with eight goals, a tally which saw him as his side’s top scorer in the competition.
