Juventus have confirmed that Douglas Costa has completed a return to his former side Gremio. The pacy winger will spend the 2021/22 campaign on loan with his boyhood side.

The Brazilian took most of his current season with Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich after struggling to nail down a regular spot at Juventus. However, it didn’t go any better for him as he struggled to make an impact for the Bavarians, having once had a spell with them back in 2017.

Costa will now spend the remainder of his Juve deal with Gremio, a club where he started his career back in 2008. Tricolor will also have the option to sign the forward on a free transfer following the conclusion of next season.

In a statement on their website, Juventus confirmed Douglas Costa’s departure.

The statement read: “Douglas Costa has officially signed for Gremio on a free loan from Juventus.”

“The Brazilian winger, who joined Juventus back in 2017 and spent this past season on loan at Bayern Munich, will wear the shirt of the Porto Alegre outfit until 30 June 2022.”

Gremio also announced his return officially on Twitter. The Brazilian side posted a picture accompanied with the caption: “Welcome home, Douglas Costa!”

It has been a frustrating past few years for Costa playing for both Bayern and Juventus.

Infact, his most prolific spell at Juventus came in the 2017/18 campaign. In that season, he managed to score four goals alongside 12 assists across all competitions.

In the remaining seasons, he only managed to score once, alongside another six assists across both seasons.

In the current Bundesliga season, Costa has only recorded three starts, with one goal and an assist to go with. Injuries have sadly been the order of the day once again, having spent a good part of the past four months on the treatment table after suffering a foot injury.
