Diego costa made it clear he had no intention of remaining at Atletico Madrid ahead of the January transfer window. The Spaniard had not trained with Los Rojiblancos for a while and was fully intent on departing the club.

Injuries and inconsistency have derailed his output by far since he returned to the club from Chelsea in 2018.

Costa has featured only seven times under Diego Simeone this term and has only two goals to show for it.

All of the above and the club’s acquisition of Luis Suarez has seen the striker inform Atletico of his desire to end his stint with the club. His contract only expires in the summer but he is ready to part ways before then.

It is also said that head coach Diego Simeone is open to granting the wishes of the 32-year-old striker, provided they find another player to replace him in the winter transfer window.

With that being said, Atletico Madrid were quick to grant the player his request as wanted and announced the termination of contract between both parties.

“Atlético de Madrid and Diego Costa have reached an agreement for the termination of the striker’s contract, which was to end on June 30, 2021. The striker asked to leave the club for personal reasons a few days ago and on Tuesday signed the termination of his contract.” a statement said on the club’s website.

Since his return to the club in 2018, the highlight of his stay at the club has been their Europa League triumph two years ago. In summary, Atletico never really benefited from Costa’s return and it’s no surprise they had no problem letting him go.
