Corinthians claimed their second victory in the Paulista Championship after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over São Caetano on Sunday night.

Bruno Méndez was the star of the day as he scored the only goal of the game that saw Timão take home all three points. With the win, Corinthians now have two wins and two draws since the start of the competition.

For Bruno Méndez, that goal was the Uruguayan’s first in a Corinthians jersey. Since he made his debut for the club, he has 34 appearances to his name. Surprisingly, his goal came in a game where he featured in another position. Naturally a centre-back, he was used as a make-shift left-back against São Caetano

The game was characteristically full of errors from both sides at the Anacleto Campanella stadium. It also potentially marked for the last game of the Paulista Championship before a two-week halt in the competition in a bid to contain recent spikes in the coronavirus numbers. However, that decision is still subject to change as a meeting will hold on Monday that will determine the final outcome of it all.

With the win, Corinthians consolidated their lead at the top of Groups A with eight points, three ahead of second place Santo André. On the other hand, São Caetano have only one point and remain bottom of Group D.

For their next outing, Corinthians play on Wednesday, against Salgueiro-PE in a game valid for the Copa do Brasil. In the Paulista Championship, Timão’s next game will be against Mirassol.

However, whether or not these fixtures will hold depend on the outcome of the meeting between the São Paulo Federation, the Public Ministry and the state government on Monday.
