Atlético-MG were widely expected to win and beat Fortaleza 2-0 in Mineirão in a game valid for the 33rd round of the Brazilian Championship. It was a peculiar result as the win saw Galo surpass struggling São Paulo to move up to second place behind leaders

Both goals for Galo came in the second half via Arana and Vargas.

Atlético-MG started the game brightly and made the early marker. The first chance of the game came via Arana but Fortaleza goalkeeper Felipe Alves was on par to make a save.

Fortaleza then made a response through Ronald but he sent his shot straight at Everson for an easy save.

Hyoran came close for Atlético-MG again but sent his effort just wide off the post. It was back and forth between both sides as Fortaleza got the next chance through David but the forward sent his effort over the bar.

Sasha had a good chance to break the deadlock but Felipe Alves made a stunning save that ensured the first half ended goalless.

The second half resumed and Atlético-MG finally broke the deadlock. Arana made a quick run behind Tinga and beat Felipe Alves with a shot to the left corner in the 57th minute. Eight minutes later, Atlético-MG were awarded a penalty and Felipe Alves saved Varga’s attempt. However, the forward scored from the rebound to double his side’s advantage.

Fortaleza had a chance to reduce the deficit but Osvaldo missed his penalty and sent it on the bar. Atlético-MG scored yet again through Savarino but saw the goal ruled out by VAR.

Atlético-MG are on decent form at the moment. They have only lost twice in their last ten games. It is a run of form that has seen them move up to second as they continue to pile up pressure on leaders Internacional.

For their next outing, Atlético-MG will take on Goiás on Wednesday while Fortaleza will be hopeful of moving further away from relegation when they take on Coritiba on Thursday.
