Atlético-GO claimed a big win on Thursday as they beat Palestino in Chile 1-0 for the second round of the Copa Sudamericana. The victory was significant as it was the team’s first victory outside Brazil.

The decisive goal of the game came via Zé Roberto in the 11th minute of the game. Atlético had less possession of the ball but they were the more clinical side in front of goal and could have easily scored more on the night.

In the final minutes of the game, they came close to conceding but were able to see out their lead eventually.

In the second period, João Paulo should have made it 2-0 for Atlético but Palestino goalkeeper Toselli made a good save to keep his side in the game. On another occasion, the team from Goiás once again thought they had extended their lead but a last-gasp clearance on the goal-line was made. They were almost punished for missing their chances when Palestino came close to scoring two minutes from time but Suárez headed wide.

The win also sees Atlético continue their recent impressive run of form. As it stands, they are unbeaten in their last 19 games across all competitions, winning 16 of them in that period. You would have to go back to the 14th of February for the last time Atlético-GO lost a competitive match.

With the result, Atlético are up to four points and are second in Group G, behind Libertad with two wins from two games so far. However, the team from Goiás have the chance to go top of the table when they face Libertad for the third round next Thursday. Once again, it’s important to note that only the first position will advance to the round of 16.
