The Argentine grew to be a fan favourite during his time with Cruzeiro and it is no longer secret that a potential return for the midfielder is in the pipeline already.

The Argentine joined Independiente from Cruzeiro  in a US $ 5 million deal last August. In barely a year at the club, the impact of the coronavirus pandemic could have a say on his future.

Much recently, reports have surfaced about Independiente having financial problems and struggling to keep up with the wage demands of Romero.

That alone leaves Cruzeiro with a big chance of re-signing the midfielder and the club’s potential plans to do so was echoed by the words of their president.

“Chances are always there. We are working hard. We have to be down to earth. We have been talking since the beginning, putting Cruzeiro on the forefront.” Sergio Santos said in an interview via the official Cruzeiro channel.

“There are high financial complications in the transfer market at the moment. But, in fact, it is clear that we will do everything possible to make it possible. And the impossible too. Maybe we will be able to make this great delivery”.

The player had a stellar three years with the Brazilian side between 2016 and 2019 and it is easy to see why they would want him back.

This is not to say any deal for Romero would be very straightforward. In quite similar fashion to IndependienteCruzeiro also have financial problems of their own.

Just recently, the Geras Minas outfit had to let go of the likes of Robinho and Edilson simply to free up the wage bill.

The developing story now is that both sides could find a way to agree a loan deal that would at least see Romero come off the wage bill for Independiente.

During his spell at the Mineirao, Romero also played at right back for Cruzeiro and a return to the club would come in handy now that they are lacking players in that position.
