Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says that he never broached the idea of bringing Philippe Coutinho back to the club this summer because the club could not afford it.

The Reds sold the Brazilian to Barcelona for £114m last January and subsequently spent the funds on Virgil van Dijk and Alisson.

Coutinho was linked with a host of Premier League clubs, including Liverpool, as his Barca move turned sour. He has now joined Bayern Munich on loan.

“It sounds weird, but we could not afford it. We have already spent the money that we got for him. He's a super player and a super boy

“We were reluctant to hand it over at the time, but Barcelona forced us with money, so to speak. He is a player who can change games for the positive.

“It's not that nice for Dortmund, but it's a great transfer for Bayern and the Bundesliga," Klopp concluded.
