The interest of Benfica in Grêmio left-back Marcelo Hermes may pave the way for a new signing for Premier League side Manchester City.
According to the Portuguese press, the probable arrival of the Brazilian to the club will facilitate the release of Alejandro Grimaldo to the team led by Pep Guardiola. Last week, Portuguese newspaper O Jogo had published that Manchester City planned to make an offer to sign the left-back during the next transfer window in January. Grimaldo’s release clause is €60 million, but the Portuguese press reports that the two clubs are willing to negotiate, and the transfer can be completed for a fee close to €45 million.
Marcelo Hermes is very close to exchanging Grêmio for Benfica. The youngster, who was removed from the first-team in July after a disagreement on contract renewal, is in advanced negotiation with the Portuguese club, according to UOL Esporte. Marcelo Hermes will arrive at Benfica as a free-agent because the contract of the player with Grêmio runs out at the end of the year. Hermes is expected to sign a five-year contract with Benfica, and his monthly salary will be close to €32,000. Marcelo Hermes signed his first professional contract with Grêmio in 2011. In March 2014, he extended the bond until the beginning of 2015. But in August of the same year, he signed a new deal that runs until December 31, 2016.
