Bayern Munich midfielder Luiz Gustavo believes that new signing Javi Martínez will prove to be a useful addition at the club, but has no plans to give up his starting position.

The Spain international joined the Bavarians from Athletic Bilbao this summer after the German side agreed to pay the €40 million buyout clause in his contract.

The Brazilian is confident that both he and Martínez, who signed a five-year contract with the Bundesliga giants, will get plenty of playing time this season.

Gustavo said: “He is a good player. He will definitely help us.

“The coach decides who plays and I have to accept that. A long season awaits and there will be plenty of games.”

The former Hoffenheim star also spoke about Bayern’s Champions League group stage opener against Valencia on Wednesday evening.

“We have to respect all the teams in the group. There are no easy games. Valencia might be the best-known opponent, but the other teams can be dangerous as well,” he continued.

“We have to be very focused and alert in every game. We always want to win every game, also against Valencia.”
