Pepe, now 29, arrived in Portugal in 2001 with Maritimo, before making his name on the European stage with FC Porto in 2004.

“I feel a bit like this (lack of recognition),” the Real Madrid defender said. “But, I also understand.

“I left the country just before I turned 18 years and nobody knew me. I had a unique opportunity to come to Madeira and play in the Portuguese league.

“I feel something inside also moves with the person, but I took the option of leaving my country. I was lucky to succeed and be happy.”

Since arriving in Europe, Pepe has felt welcomed by the people in both Portugal and now Spain. But, does he still think of a Brazil return?

“No, no, no. I no longer think of returning to Brazil to play.

Here I am fine. Both in Spain and in Portugal I am treated well and it has passed through my head that to go back would be lack of respect for these people. It was they who made me who I am today.”
