Fluminense were the first of the Rio giants in action on Wednesday and it seems their Taça Guanabara triumph on Sunday may of caused a Taça Rio hangover as they suffered a 2-1 defeat to minnows Resende.

A second-string Tricolor side found themselves trailing after just five minutes, when Marcel found the back of the net with a superb strike from the edge of the penalty box.

On the half hour mark, Fluminense managed to get back on level terms thanks to Rafael Sobis’ cool finish, but Marcelo Regis’ 64th minute tap-in gave Resende all three points.

Next up were the Taça Guanabara finalists Vasco, who were frustrated to a 2-2 draw against Bonsucesso at the São Januário.

Alecsandro gave the Cruz de Malta the lead after just two minutes with a tap-in, followed by Felipe’s neat finish just before the hour mark.

However for the rest of the second half, Vasco seemed to of stepped their foot off the gas. Diogo pulled a goal back for Bonsucesso in the 63rd minute, before Marcos Goiano’s strike eight minutes later ensured both sides would share the spoils.

In the late kick-off, Flamengo were beaten by Boavista 2-1 in Macaé. After just five minutes Vager Love gave the Rubro Negro the lead, but ex-Fluminense striker equalised for the Rio minnows from the penalty spot.

Much to the frustration of Flamengo, Boavista couldn’t believe their luck when the referee allowed Paulo Rodrigues handball goal.

On Thursday, Botafogo emerged as 4-2 winners against Americano. Marcos Felipe gave Americano a surprised lead after eight minutes, but Fellype Gabriel’s tap-in swung the game in to the Alvinegro’s favour.

Renato managed to get Botafogo in front in the 71st minute, and four minutes later, Herrera grabbed the Seria A giants their third goal with a deflected finish.

However Americano refused to let their heads drop and grabbed a goal back through Hugo’s header in the 79th minute, but in Caio sealed Botafogo’s win stoppage time with an easy tap-in from two yards out.
