Atlético Mineiro humble Santos
Réver had given Galo a first half lead, converting a back-post knock-down from a free-kick in a first half dominated by the Minas Gerais side. All this though was before the referee played his part in the second half.
A penalty at either end, converted by Borges and Magno Alves respectively, were awarded for very little in the way of foulplay. Right-back Crystian was shown a red-card for his role in conceding Atlético’s penalty, much to the disbelief of all concerned.
Santos tried to push for an equaliser, but when star-man Neymar was also sent-off – this time for dissent, there was no hope of a revival.
Atlético Mineiro now lie one point off safety and cruelly, arch-rivals Cruzeiro are currently the side occupying that final place above the drop-zone with nine games to play.
With Cruzeiro currently ten games without a win however, things are looking good for Atlético Mineiro if they can keep picking up good results.
