A hat-trick by Brazilian striker Cacau helped VfB Stuttgart to a 4-2 win over Bundesliga newcomers FSV Mainz on Sunday.
Mainz, promoted to the Bundesliga last season for the first time in their 99-year history, played aggressive, attacking football but their defence proved vulnerable.
The new season started in earnest on Saturday with a 2-0 win for Bayern Munich over Hamburg SV thanks to goals from Michael Ballack and Sebastian Deisler. Champions Werder Bremen beat Schalke 04 1-0 on Friday.
