Palmeiras defeated Internacional for the first time in five years at Porto Alegre, their last victory at the venue being in 2016.

Despite losing a player in the 63rd minute, Verdao won 2-1 in the Brazilian Championship on Wednesday night in Beira-Rio. The goals were scored by Deyverson and Danilo. Edenilson grabbed one for Inter from the penalty spot.

Inter and Palmeiras had a low-key first half, but the Sao Paulo club was more effective and came out on top. Early on, Verdao took hold of the game and placed the opposition under constant threat. It only took them ten minutes to get on the board and grab the lead. By diverting Raphael Veiga’s free kick from outside the box, Deyverson made it 1-0.

Inter didn’t have much of an attacking presence in the first half, but gradually improved and came close to equalizing twice late in the half, first with Yuri Alberto and then with Edenilson’s header, both of which were saved by Jailson. Breno Lopes put Palmeiras up 2-0 in the 37th minute, but his goal was overruled due to offside.

Inter’s goal for the second half was a draw, therefore the game got off to a frantic start. In the 55th minute, Yuri Alberto sent in a cross, but it was intercepted in front of goal, and his teammate was nowhere near to put the rebound into the net.

Palmeiras had an opportunity to put the game to bed when Raphael Veiga was unmarked in the penalty area, but Daniel’s stunning save stopped him.

Kuscevic then conceded a foul in the box in the 63rd minute, when it appeared the defender shoved Caio Vidal in the face of the goal. Following a VAR review, the referee gave a penalty and issued a red card to the Palmeiras defender.

Edenilson scored from the penalty spot in the 66th minute to level the game. Despite having a man advantage, Inter were unable to take control of the game and score the game-winning goal.

Verdao then stunned the hosts via a late goal through Danilo on a counterattack to win the game and take all three points.

On Saturday, Inter will be eager to return to winning ways against Corinthians at Neo Química Arena. Palmeiras will be looking to keep their momentum against Sport on Sunday.
