São Paulo remained top of the league as they made it 5 out of 5 in the latest round
of Campeonato Brasileiro. First half goals from Lucas and Marlos secured a 2 – 0
win over Ceará. São Paulo’s goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni, more known for scoring
penalties than saving them, had earlier blocked Osvaldo’s poor 21st minute penalty
before São Paulo took the lead courtesy of Lucas’ well worked goal.
Felipe Scolari’s Palmeiras moved into 2nd place with a 5 – 0 victory over Avai.
However, the performance of the week belonged to newly promoted Bahia who
defeated reigning champions Fluminense 1 – 0 in Rio. Elsewhere, the Rio derby of
Flamengo v Botafogo finished 0 – 0 while Santos versus Corinthians was re-arranged
for a later date; allowing Santos to prepare for this week’s Copa Libertadores Final.
