Mikel Arteta got the better of his mentor Pep Guardiola as Arsenal booked their place in the FA Cup final. Aubameyang showed once again why the Gunners must do all they can to keep him at the club.

In the build-up to the game, much talk was made of the ‘friendship’ between Mikel Arteta and Pep Guardiola. Both managers already had positive words to say about each other prior to this fixture. A clinical Aubameyang would go on to be the difference after 90 minutes.

After a missing a glorious chance moments earlier, Aubameyang would go on to break the deadlock in the 19th minute against the run of play. The Gunners captain redeemed himself with a delightful poked finish into the far corner. It was a brilliant assist from Nicolas Pepe as well.

The Gunners were put under immense pressure with City pushing for the equalizer after the break. But again, Arsenal scored against the run of play. Aubameyang raced through following Tierney’s searching ball before slotting it between the legs of Ederson.

City continued to throw the kitchen sink at Arsenal in search for a moment of inspiration but found nothing. Despite all their free-flowing passes and possession play, it just couldn’t amount to anything in the final third.

This was a personal triumph for Arteta and completes a superb week for the Gunners. It means they have now beaten champions Liverpool and Manchester City in the space of a week.

Arsenal are the most successful team in FA Cup history with 13 titles and in victory they move one step closer to a 14th.
