Arsenal started the game on a positive note but it all started crushing down for the Gunners as injuries started rushing in.

Granit Xhaka barely lasted five minutes on the pitch before he was taken off and replaced by Dani Ceballos.

The real problems for Mikel Arteta started when defender Pablo Mari was taken off in the 24th minute. David Luiz was on the bench due to speculation around his future but was the only real candidate to be called upon at that point.

It wasn’t long before the Brazilian failed to control a ball and gifted Raheem Sterling the chance to score the opener.

He then hauled down Riyad Mahrez to give away a penalty and was sent off. The suspension will mean he has played his final game for Arsenal unless he extends his deal.

“I should have taken a different decision in the last two months but I didn’t,” he told Sky Sports.

“All about my contract, if I stay here or not. I have 14 days to be here and that’s it. I should have tried to decide my future as early as possible, but I didn’t.

“I don’t want to use that as an alibi or excuse, it’s my fault – that’s it. I love to be here. That’s why I continue to train hard.”

Arsenal still have a decision on whether to extend Luiz’s contract for a year and Arteta was quick to say that his woeful performance won’t affect the club’s final decision.

On an individual note, it’s been a torrid season for Luiz as he became the player with most errors leading to goals so far.
