Arsenal defender Pablo Mari says that playing at the Maracanã was a highlight of his time at Flamengo.

Mari spent 6 months with the Brazilian champions before joining the Gunners on loan. In a Reddit Q & A with Arsenal fans, Mari says his 6 months in Brazil was very memorable, not least because he regularly played at one of world football’s most iconic stadiums.

“Brazil is also a good country and an unbelievable place to live because some places are like a paradise and it is unbelievable to live there.

“And in football I played in stadiums like Maracanã and I find it impossible to describe that feeling.” Mari says he and his defensive partner David Luiz have bonded through a shared appreciation of Fla coach Jorge Jesus, who coached Luiz at Benfica.

“We spoke a lot about that because when I arrived in the first week at Arsenal, we talked a lot about the coach I had in Brazil. He’s a coach that always stays with you for the rest of your career because not so many people can do what he does.

“Me and David spoke a lot about those things and it’s funny because every player is the same when they have had Jorge as a coach. It was really good to have the same thing with David and it means we can have it as an understanding when we play together on the pitch.”
