Arsenal were in for Sao Paulo defender, claims director
Arsenal were interested in signing Sao Paulo defender Walce according to Tricolor’s Director of Football Alex Passaro.
The Gunners ended up settling on Flamengo centre-half Pablo Mari in the January transfer window, but looked at Walce first, according to Passaro.
Arsenal’s Technical Director Edu Gaspar has good access to the Brazilian market and Passaro says he spoke to the club about their defender Walce.
“Walce had a proposal from Red Bull Bragantino, which we turned down, here I think I can even say that we had a conversation with Arsenal,” Passaro told UOL Esporte.
“Exactly for the vacancy that was filled by Pablo Marí, we were talking to Edu Gaspar. He
(Walce) ended up getting injured, which happens, we need to be prepared for that.”
Arsenal turned to Mari instead, signing him on loan until the end of the season, with a view to a permanent deal being struck in the summer.
