CONMEBOL ask for delay in start of World Cup 2022 Qualifiers
CONMEBOL have asked for the start of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers to be delayed until September in light of the global COVID-19 outbreak.
Qualifying was due to begin at the end of March as the ten South American teams plot their path to Qatar 2022.
Brazil were due to kick off their campaign with a home match against Bolivia, before taking on Peru in Lima.
These games, alongside all other CONMEBOL matches, have now been postponed as sport grinds to a halt across the globe.
CONMEBOL have asked FIFA to delay qualifying until September with further matches scheduled for June.
“"By doing this, the confederation ensures all precautions are taken against the global and regional spread of the coronavirus, in line with the recommendations of international health authorities," CONMEBOL said in a statement following a meeting of its executive board via a video conference call on Thursday.
