Gremio Players Don Masks In Coronavirus Protest
Players of Gremio took to the pitch wearing medical masks on Sunday in protest at being made to play during the Coronavirus pandemic.
Gremio’s Campeonato Gaucho fixture against Sao Luiz was played at the Arena Gremio behind closed doors.
Most leagues across the world have been suspended in response to the COVID-19 outbreak but Brazil’s state championship fixtures went ahead this weekend.
On Sunday evening, CBF made the call to suspend all competitions under their auspices, but Gremio players were unhappy about being made to play on Sunday.
“This protest by the players makes implicit our support for the championship to be halted - life must take precedence," said Paulo Luz, Gremio's director of football.
Gremio boss Renato Gaucho backed the protest by his players, saying that the game should not have taken place.
“The whole world has stopped - shouldn't Brazilian football stop as well? That's our message and I hope they listen. We hope that good sense will prevail.”
